King Street Junior: The Book

Leaflet

“King Street Junior” is a modern radio phenomenon. It has run for 20 years and 100 episodes on BBC Radio 4, from 1985 to 2005, and can still be heard on BBC7. At its peak it had an audience worldwide of 22 million listeners, and was described by the radio critic of The Times as “The Sistine Chapel of Radio drama”.

Now the series creator, and writer of 87 of the episodes, Jim Eldridge, tells the inside story of the radio series in a new book “King Street Junior – The Inside Story”. This is not just the behind the scenes problems, but the 9-year struggle to get the show on the air in  the first place.

“King Street Junior – The Inside Story” is not just for fans of the series, it is a must for all those interested in modern media: the impact of the internal politics of the BBC on any  series; why whole episodes have to be rewritten at the last moment.

As well as telling the inside story of “King Street Junior” from the moment of creation  to recording the 100th episode, the book lists every episode, complete with cast and crew, episode story, recording and transmission dates; biographies of the main cast, writers and crew; and also has the full script of the original pilot show.

It also has pages of photographs, including many candid shots taken in the studio during recordings.
